"I'm
actually quite pleased with the way this one turned out after
moving quite noticeably from the tropics to the winter in
one fell swoop. This was to be the last ELO album of that
century. Even so I think it turned out to be one of the better
ones (the album, not the century)."
Jeff Lynne, 2006 |

'Balance
Of Power'
saw Jeff Lynne deliberately move away from the grand, sweeping
orchestral style of 'Out of the Blue'
to a condensed, hard-hitting and rhythmic sound that utilised
drum machines, sequencers and synthesisers. A Top 20 hit in 1986,
the album sports many great songs, including the singles 'Calling
America', 'So Serious' and
'Getting To The Point'.
Superbly
remastered by ELO songwriter and producer Jeff Lynne with
engineer Jeff Magid, ELO's most underrated album deserves
closer inspection, especially as this definitive edition now features
7 bonus tracks (5 previously unreleased!). Highlights include
a stunning alternate take of 'Heaven Only
Knows', a guitar-driven version of 'Secret
Lives' and rare UK single b-side 'Destination
Unknown'.
Commentary
by Jeff Lynne and in-depth sleeve notes by ELO archivist Rob
Caiger shed light on ELO's final years in the 20th Century,
while the colourful 12-page booklet restores original album artwork
and has many previously unseen photos and memorabilia from band
member archives, including the last photo of ELO's 1986 touring
line-up.
