Mr Blue Sky
"When I was a little lad, a record
called Sparky's Magic Piano was sometimes played on the radio.
That talking piano haunted me and many years later drove me
to find out how to do it..." JEFF

02.
Evil Woman
"Probably the fastest song I ever
wrote was on that session - 'Evil Woman' which took about
six minutes to write the basic tune. I was always planning
on changing the chorus bit but I couldn't come up with anything
better." JEFF

03.
Don't Bring Me Down
"I looped two bars of drumming taken from a different
song on Discovery (you'll have to guess which one) and then
I overdubbed eight grand pianos, a cement mixer and two crates
of Newcastle Brown Ale and that got the ball rolling."

04.
Sweet Talkin' Woman
"Originally called
'Dead End Street,' has the most edits of any record
I've ever made. Painstakingly joined together with half a
mile of editing tape." JEFF

Shine A Little Love
"A sort of disco beat that I'd
almost used before, on 'Sweet
Talkin' Woman.'" JEFF

Turn To Stone
"That era was when the writing
of the material really came together, and the songs were always
catchy..." JEFF

The Diary Of Horace Wimp
"It's a story about someone
who's a bit of a twit and could never get anything done...
but finally... a happy ending. There's no Saturday because
every Saturday is a football match." JEFF

08.
Confusion
"There was this keyboard
called the CS-80. It's the main keyboard sound on the record.
Unfortunately, the thing weighed about 2,000 pounds. It's
a great machine but a roadie's nightmare."

Hold On Tight
"Recorded in L.A. with words translated
by the French nanny on the day before the session."

Xanadu (New Version)
"A song I wrote for the movie of the same name, sung brilliantly
by Olivia Newton-John. I always liked the song and fancied
another go at it."

different chords."

Magic) was always there working with me."

Alright
Well, Alright came about a third of the way through the project
(Zoom). I just wanted a bouncy one - I know it sounds banal,
you've got bouncy ones, you've got slow ones, you've got fast
ones, you've got medium ones. The words really are that it's
nice to have something to hold onto, whether it be your girlfriend
or whatever, that gets you through things. It's something
that gets you through problems...

Rock 'n' Roll Is King
"Told yer so! This track went through
many changes before becoming this song. I had about five different
melodies and four different sets of words."
